JUUL VAN DEN HEUVEL: The Legacy / De nalatenschapExhibition 23.2 - 30.3 2019
What to do when your studio is overrun with mountains of boxes of your parents seemingly worthless memorabilia? THE LEGACY / De nalatanschap, an exhibition of recent work from JUUL VAN DEN HEUVEL, is her newest project, dealing with inheritance and loss by creating new art pieces using objects bound up with her parents’ history and her memories of them. From her mother: stacks of paintings, drawings, sketches she had made at the Rijksakademie, boxes with dresses she'd sewn, pots and pans and shoes. After her father’s death she reconstructed the dolls house he had made after she and her sisters had left home. As she worked, more and more boxes arrived, talismans of the past that provided material for the LEGACY. Like a detective looking for clues she combed through letters and news clippings, photos and recipes. Each item evokes a reaction as she collects and cuts out her mother’s aquarelles, unraveling and restoring textiles, or adding paint to her collages from the past. She collects reviews of her father’s theatre performances and mounts, on a miniature stage, her handmade paper figures of him in all of his Shakespearean roles, letting him “play on”. In describing her method and meaning Juul states: "I draw and tear and cut up; photograph, restore and pull apart. I write and, in between, I mourn. As I take a saw to my grandmother's portrait I shiver, but I may, from my sisters and my parents. We are united in creating these new works. The exhibition and the book are an ode to my parents and a gift to my sisters.” The Suzanne Biederberg Gallery is delighted to present Juul van den Heuvel's 4th solo exhibition with us. Time and family are recurring themes in her work. Charcoal drawings of hair in all shapes evolved into large format hair landscapes and finally into black holes on canvas and paper. Later, research on shape/void, black and white led her to rediscover color as the LEGACY project offered new inspiration for her recent paintings, sculptures, drawings and installations. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated, limited edition art book, The Legacy / De nalatenschap, available at the opening.
