ABOUT: We are delighted to host an exhibition of two esteemed Dutch photographers, Julie van der Vaart and Guido Paulussen. They share a mutual interest in the human body as a landscape and as a register of the passage of time and of timelessness. In a world experiencing a period of profound transformation, their work offers an oasis of quiet reflection. In the exhibited Beyond Time, van der Vaart has made small prints of naked bodies, shot in analogue black and white, with an occasional coloured work. As Merel Bem writes: ”Landscapes and bodies – these are two subjects that recur constantly in the work of Julie van der Vaart. Her photographic archive contains innumerable monochrome series of nudes and romantic vistas, from which she can continually compile new series. Whether a photo was taken yesterday or two years ago is immaterial. The temporal dimension has recently started playing a greater part in her work. Inspired by theories of non-linear time, astrophysics and quantum mechanics, she has begun experimenting in the darkroom. For the “Beyond Time” series, she manually processed her photos with chemicals to produce bodies that seem to dissolve into the cosmos, simultaneously appearing and disappearing. A photo is prosaically a record of the past, but now it remains eternally afloat in imaginary time.” Julie van der Vaart has had numerous successful exhibitions and presentations, and as a young photographer has built an impressive following. Her recently published book, ”Beyond Time,” will also be on view. Guido Paulussen's photography also uses the passing of time as an important theme. In his exhibited series Landscapes, he examines the process of ageing by extreme close ups of his own skin–the human shell–to record the impermanence of one’s body--his body as landscape. His age and accompanying physical problems and an increased confrontation with medical specialists resulted in his 2017 series Exposing myself, a compelling visual diary of human frailty. This photo diary in book form will be available in the gallery. Following an education at the Netherlands Film Academy, Paulussen worked as a cinematographer, then as a producer of art programmes for the NOS (Dutch State Broadcaster) and NPS (Dutch Programme Foundation).
