AUTO-BIO is an exhibition of paintings of both artists' very personal memories of their own history. Family members are their direct source of inspiration, captured in images, through which Johannes van Vugt and Lefteris Olympios create a collective pathway full of desire and hope, based on their individual experiences of real emotions which compel living through them in the here and now. A new reality--another subjective authenticity--is further woven time after time in the thoughts of the maker and the observer. They allow themselves to be lured into soothing or regenerative feelings which are/were significant for them throughout their lives. Both artists paint their beloved and imagined rudiments from their own subjective outlook, of their family and relatives, modestly or flamboyantly to feel either the softer context of the core, to confront the underlying hard reality, or to give their experiences another perspective. It is fascinating to see their different stylistic approaches to their subject matter while they both use figuration as their basis. AUTO-BIO shows the drive but also the freedom to explore memories, to experience them and allow them to continue to exist in another mindset. Johannes van Vugt (Rijswijk, Noord-Brabant, NL, 1954) studied at the Rijksakademie of Amsterdam and the AKV St. Joost in Breda. He has had many solo and group exhibitions both here and abroad, such as his solo exhibition in the National Museum of Jeju in South Korea. Lefteris Olympios (Cyprus 1953) studied at Doxiades and at the Academy School of Fine Art in Athens and later at the Vrije Academie in The Hague, NL. He exhibits widely both in the Netherlands and internationally. In the 47th Venice Biennale (1997) he represented Cyprus with his work. Both artists live and work in Amsterdam. Their work can be found in public (museum) collections and also in private and corporate collections. With the kind support of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in The Hague.
